The Cog Railway is a fantastic journey up the South side of Mt Washington NH. From thee Bartlett Inn you turn left and it is about 17 miles to the base road. There is nothing between the inn and the Cog except the Crawford Notch and National Forest so it is a very pretty drive! There are places along the Cog base road (which is approx. 6 mi.) where you can stop and see a beautiful gorge just a few feet from the road. The Cog Base Station has a small museum in the basement, a gift shop and a canteen too. The Trains themselves are beautiful painted bright reds, blue and green and the whole ora is one that takes you back to the 1800′s! Passengers may choose to ride The Cog in a car powered by a historic steam locomotive or the more modern and eco-friendly bio-diesel engines. The steam is really interesting as they load coal in the whole way up launching a black plume to follow and then they ride the brakes down!
The train ride takes about 1 hour to the top offering time for continuous vies and photos. The Top of Mt Washington Observatory has a funky little museum in the basement..don’t miss it ..I love the quirkiness of it. There is also a canteen and of course the views are unbelievable for 360 degrees.
Stay at the Bartlett Inn, enjoy a yummy country breakfast and Innkeepers will check the weather cam at the top for you each day to help you plan the clearest best day for The Cog Railway as the weather at the top is very changeable. On a very clear day you can see over 100 miles! On the other days that are not so clear…it is still a fun experience especially if you are a train aficionado! You can come back to the inn at the end of the day and unwind in the heated pool and Innkeepers will give advice on hikes, shopping and dinner too!! Call 1800 292 2353 Bartlett Inn.
